Hokkaido also called Yeso, second biggest island, is located in north japan. It is both a department and a region.
The island has been occupied in the 16th century by japanese who started commercial exchange with the Ainou, known as the first inhabitants of japan.
The island tried to claim its independence but the rebellion had been squashed by the Meiji restoration in 1869.
There is still an ainu minority living there today.
